{"id":3340,"date":"2020-02-21T12:51:44","date_gmt":"2020-02-20T23:51:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.reportitnow-global.com\/nz\/report-boards-must-pay-more-attention-to-ethics-whistleblowing-and-culture\/"},"modified":"2022-03-30T16:38:32","modified_gmt":"2022-03-30T03:38:32","slug":"report-boards-must-pay-more-attention-to-ethics-whistleblowing-and-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reportitnow-global.com\/nz\/report-boards-must-pay-more-attention-to-ethics-whistleblowing-and-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"Report: Boards must pay more attention to ethics, whistleblowing and culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><b>The latest Director Sentiment Survey says that more comprehensive reporting on ethical matters and conduct incidents needed&#8230;<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Produced by The Institute of Directors and ASB, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iod.org.nz\/assets\/Resources-insights\/Research-and-analysis\/Institute-of-Directors-Director-Sentiment-Survey-2019.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which provides a snapshot of issues, challenges and insights from the director community, finds board focus on ethical reporting, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reportitnow.co.nz\/\">whistleblowing<\/a> and Speak Up initiatives lacking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe board\u2019s role in overseeing culture has been in the spotlight following a number of recent governance reviews, including the Australian Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services Industry, the FMA\/RBNZ banking and life insurer reviews, and investigations into bullying in the sport sector and sexual misconduct in the legal sector,\u201d says the report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Although the majority (77%) of directors say their board monitors and regularly discusses the culture of the organisation, only 43% say they actually receive comprehensive reporting from management about ethical matters, conduct incidents and follow-up actions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cGiven the number of high-profile bullying cases and the increased focus on sexual harassment in the workplace, including the #MeToo movement, it is surprising that only just over half of boards discussed workplace bullying in the last 12 months and only 35% discussed sexual harassment,\u201d says the report.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe effects of conduct risk can be devastating for victims and also severe for organisations and should be on the risk radar of all boards.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to the report, just 52% of boards are discussing workplace bullying, and only 62% have discussed workplace mental health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAll boards need to ensure robust monitoring of organisational culture and conduct, and that the right processes are in place for potential issues to be raised,\u201d says the Institute. \u201cThis includes ensuring there are effective Speak Up provisions and whistleblowing systems in place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/reportitnow-global.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/board1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1443\" src=\"https:\/\/reportitnow-global.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/board1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"738\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reportitnow-global.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/board1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/reportitnow-global.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/board1-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/reportitnow-global.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/board1-1024x630.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/reportitnow-global.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/board1-768x472.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The report also says that, given the grave potential ramifications of inappropriate conduct, it is \u201cconcerning\u201d to see a drop in the number of boards that are discussing whistleblowing and how their organisation makes Speak Up provisions effective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhistleblowing systems and Speak Up provisions help promote and support an ethical workplace culture, yet only 35 percent of boards &#8211; down from 44 percent in 2018 &#8211; have discussed whistle-blowing and how the organisation makes Speak Up provisions effective in the last 12 months.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBoards play a critical role in holding management to account on transparency and accountability in relation to ethical behaviour within the workplace, and all boards need to ensure that there is appropriate processes in place for issues to be raised.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s critical that all boards have the information they need to assess and monitor ethical matters and conduct risk on a regular basis.
