{"id":3605,"date":"2022-04-18T00:50:22","date_gmt":"2022-04-17T12:50:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reportitnow-global.com\/nz\/acfe-report-to-the-nations-2022\/"},"modified":"2022-07-24T21:07:18","modified_gmt":"2022-07-24T09:07:18","slug":"acfe-report-to-the-nations-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reportitnow-global.com\/nz\/acfe-report-to-the-nations-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"ACFE Report to the Nations 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">ACFE Report to the Nations 2022<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 12th edition of the ACFE report on occupational fraud has been released showing the global pandemic having far reaching effects on fraud,&nbsp;technology changing the way fraud is reported and tipoffs still the best way to detect unethical behaviour in the workplace. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Occupational fraud surges in pandemic environment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pandemic has had an impact on occupational fraud cases, giving employees new opportunities to commit fraud &#8211; but also offering organisations new ways to detect it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the report, half of all fraud cases in the study were affected by the pandemic in some way. &#8220;With more employees working remotely and organisations implementing major changes in processes, the pandemic created more potential opportunities for fraud in some organisations, as well as bolstering anti-fraud controls in others,&#8221; says the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between 2012 and 2022, fraud cases were caught faster, causing smaller losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/old.reportitnow-global.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Chart-010-1024x614.jpg\" alt=\"Occupational fraud\n\" class=\"wp-image-2953\"\/><figcaption>ACFE Report to the Nations 2022<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other highlights from the report&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ACFE estimates that organisations lose 5% percent of revenue every year to fraud. The average loss per case? US$1,783,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Owners\/executives committed only 23% of occupational frauds, but they caused the largest losses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/old.reportitnow-global.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Chart-9-1024x642.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2951\"\/><figcaption>ACFE Report to the Nations 2022<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">42% of frauds were detected by tip off, with more than half of all tip offs coming from employees.&nbsp;(Organisations with hotlines detect fraud more quickly and have lower losses than organisations without hotlines.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How are reports being made? <a href=\"https:\/\/old.reportitnow-global.com\/ethicspro\/\">Email and web-based<\/a> reporting has overtaken phone lines as the most common methods.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/old.reportitnow-global.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Chart-1-1024x550.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2949\"\/><figcaption>ACFE Report to the Nations 2022<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three most prevalent fraudulent schemes? Asset misappropriation, financial statement fraud and corruption schemes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to combat occupational fraud<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The presence of anti-fraud controls is closely associated with lower losses from fraud and quicker fraud detection, says the report. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe best way to stop occupational fraud remains something available to all organisations,\u201d says the ACFE. \u201cCreate anti-fraud controls and train employees how to use them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/old.reportitnow-global.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Chart-2-1024x595.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2950\"\/><figcaption>ACFE Report to the Nations 2022<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As mentioned above, tips were the most common way fraud was detected.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith their high success rate and low implementation cost, all organisations should have a tip hotline or mechanism to report fraud,\u201d says the report. \u201cWhile in the past hotlines were phone lines that employees could call to anonymously report fraud, hotlines today can include forms on a webpage or a special e-mail set up to collect tips.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo matter how much we try to use advanced tools to detect fraud, the main way it gets detected is by tip, someone reporting it,\u201d says John Warren, Vice President and General Counsel of the ACFE and co-author of the report. \u201cThat\u2019s why you need anti-fraud programs.
