Yet only 49% of New Zealand employees are satisfied with how their concerns are handled\u2014the lowest rate recorded globally. And here&#8217;s the real problem: only 44% of employees think their job would be safe if they reported serious wrongdoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1news.co.nz\/2024\/06\/26\/bnz-proposal-to-force-whistleblower-out-was-retaliation-authority-rules\/\">high-profile BNZ case<\/a> shows exactly why these fears are justified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Melissa Bowen raised concerns about a senior manager in 2016, she was assured by BNZ&#8217;s Head of Employee Relations that the bank would protect her and &#8220;does not punish people for raising their concerns.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What happened instead? The manager she&#8217;d reported then proposed making her role redundant.
