Whistleblowing systems for SMEs aren’t a big-business luxury. Small teams face the same fraud exposure with fewer controls to catch it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much of what gets written about whistleblowing systems assumes a certain kind of organisation – layers of management, a compliance team, a board. If you run a 20-person business, it’s easy to read that content and conclude none of it applies to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it does. It just looks a little different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The size assumption doesn’t hold up<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fraud and misconduct don’t scale down with headcount. According to the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners’ Occupational Fraud 2024: A Report to the Nations<\/a>, organisations with fewer than 100 employees recorded a median fraud loss of approximately NZD $240,141 – the second-highest figure of any organisation-size category, trailing only the very largest organisations, and well above the loss typically recorded by mid-sized companies.

Smaller organisations still hav fraud risk. They simply carry fewer internal controls to absorb that impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gap runs deeper than losses. The report also found that while 85% of large organisations have an established whistleblowing mechanism in place, only 25% of small businesses do – a gap the report itself describes as “especially concerning, given the importance of tips in detecting fraud.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s the real story behind whistleblowing systems for SMEs: the businesses least likely to have one are often the ones most exposed without it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What changes at smaller scale<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What does change at smaller scale is the shape of the problem. In a large organisation, a concern might travel through several layers before it reaches someone who can act on it, and there’s usually some distance between the person raising it and the person it’s about. In a 20-person business, that distance often doesn’t exist. Everyone knows everyone. The person you’d normally report a concern to might be the person the concern is about, or close enough to them that raising it feels impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

None of this requires the infrastructure of a large enterprise. A workable system for a small business generally comes down to three things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
