Heck, it\u2019s even been quite a while since your last report of ethical misconduct. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No news is good news, right?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wrong. When it comes to conduct and ethics, a calm surface can often conceal mischief and unrest beneath.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>An absence of complaints does not demonstrate an absence of problems<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quite the opposite.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhistleblowers &#8211; and large numbers of them &#8211; are crucial to keeping firms healthy and that functioning internal hotlines are of paramount importance to business goals including profitability,\u201d says Stephen Stubben, associate professor at the University of Utah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe more employees use internal whistleblowing hotlines, the less lawsuits companies face, and the less money firms pay out in settlements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stubben says that firms actively using their internal reporting systems face fewer material lawsuits and have lower settlement amounts than firms ignoring similar information. <br><br>&#8220;While all firms are likely to have some frequency of issues, firms, where these are reported early, are more likely to address them before they become larger problems resulting in costly litigation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simply put, a healthy ethical reporting culture is an active one.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A good rule of thumb: You should be receiving at least four reports per 100 employees, per annum. Any less, and there may be unacknowledged problems brewing.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And there\u2019s plenty of supporting evidence for the wider effects too. A <a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3273589\">2020 paper<\/a> from George Washington University found a clear association between the presence of an internal hotline reporting system and overall improved business performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the report, increased usage of internal reporting hotlines is positively correlated with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Greater profitability<\/li><li>Greater workforce productivity<\/li><li>Fewer lawsuits brought against the company<\/li><li>Lower settlement costs if a lawsuit does occur<\/li><li>Fewer external whistleblower reports to outside authorities<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/reportitnow-global.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/corp1-1024x670.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2174\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ethics as a comms function<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ethical reporting services and company culture are intrinsically linked with research showing that company-wide ethics training makes employers 56% more likely to receive tips-offs about unethical behaviour in the business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But training isn\u2019t enough. Executives also need to be willing to <em>communicate<\/em> &#8211; actively and often &#8211; this commitment to an ethical reporting culture.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means ensuring that comms teams are acutely aware of the company\u2019s commitment to the highest ethical standards, what <a href=\"https:\/\/reportitnow-global.com\/\">ethical reporting programs<\/a> are actually in place within the company and how they work, and what expectations are for employees and administration around internal communication of ethical issues.
