Pity then, that only two-thirds of those managers are adequately prepared to handle a report of misconduct, regardless of the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cReporting misconduct is generally becoming more acceptable,\u201d says Vidhya Balasubramanian, managing VP at Gartner\u2019s legal and compliance research group, \u201chowever, the majority of people still don\u2019t report the misconduct they witness, primarily because they fear retaliation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s an information gap here,\u201d she says, \u201cespecially when you consider that only 14 percent of the misconduct reports happen through official channels, such as the compliance team or HR.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>So why don\u2019t employees report misconduct?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to reporting misconduct, power and position within that organisation count for a lot. Fear of reprisals, losing one&#8217;s job, or that job becoming intolerable, can be powerful dissuaders for employees, especially junior workers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, fear of being seen as \u2018the office snitch\u2019 or fear of future interactions with the subject of the complaint can prevent employees, even senior ones, from speaking up.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"864\" height=\"566\" src=\"https:\/\/reportitnow-global.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/stress.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reportitnow-global.com\/sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/03\/stress.jpg 864w, https:\/\/reportitnow-global.com\/sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/03\/stress-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/reportitnow-global.com\/sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/03\/stress-768x503.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 864px) 100vw, 864px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Uncertainty around how much information they need to make a complaint, and uncertainty about what a supervisor\u2019s reactions to the complaint might be can also prevent workers from reporting misconduct.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This uncertainty is an organisational failing. Employees &#8211; even new ones &#8211; should understand the proper processes for reporting unethical behaviour. Instead, give them \u201cregular touchpoints so they don\u2019t feel their information got lost in a vacuum somewhere.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open, ethical workplaces start at the top.
