{"id":2876,"date":"2022-02-09T03:20:41","date_gmt":"2022-02-09T03:20:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reportitnow-global.com\/?p=2876"},"modified":"2022-02-09T03:20:41","modified_gmt":"2022-02-09T03:20:41","slug":"ey-global-integrity-report-puts-nz-down-under","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reportitnow-global.com\/uk\/ey-global-integrity-report-puts-nz-down-under\/","title":{"rendered":"EY Global Integrity Report puts NZ \u2018down under\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\" id=\"ey-global-integrity-report-puts-nz-down-under\">EY Global Integrity Report puts NZ \u2018down under\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>With tsunami-like force, New Zealand\u2019s \u2018don\u2019t speak up\u2019 culture gained walloping exposure in EY\u2019s recently released <em>Global Integrity Report<\/em>, says ethics expert Jane Arnott. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While accustomed to seeing ourselves bathing in the perceived glory of a top ranking in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transparency.org\/en\/cpi\/2021\">Transparency International\u2019s corruption index<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.ey.com\/content\/dam\/ey-sites\/ey-com\/en_gl\/topics\/assurance\/assurance-pdfs\/ey-global-integrity-report-2022.pdf\">EY report<\/a> (pdf) exposes a much more inglorious reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In highlighting \u2018don\u2019t speak up\u2019, the report says that 40% of workers have not reported concerns about misconduct despite being impacted by it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a body blow to all the codes of ethics\/conduct that boast integrity, the report also noted that unethical behaviour was often tolerated when the people involved were senior managers &#8211; despite New Zealand ranking third in the world for rating integrity as important.<sup>[1]<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Further, the report found that of the nearly 60% of workers who reported misconduct felt pressure not to report it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This finding is consistent with the informal research brought to light by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ethicsconversation.co.nz\/\">The Ethics Conversation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey were supposed to support me\u201d; \u201cthey said they would listen\u201d; \u201cI never imagined they would turn on me\u201d; and \u201cI had to get a lawyer, even though I was doing the right thing\u201d, are just some of the experiences quoted.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Employees who speak up suffer the wrath of managers when wrongdoing is too close to home and the implications too far reaching.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If there was one Christmas message that The Ethics Conversation wasn\u2019t expecting to hear quite so consistently \u2013 this was it. Managers in their 30\u2019s or 40\u2019s who <em>did<\/em> speak up had experienced nothing but intense suspicion, walls of indifference, doubt and speculation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once again, the value of an <a href=\"https:\/\/reportitnow-global.com\/ethicspro\/\">external speak up option<\/a> &#8211; such as that provided by global ethical reporting company Report it Now, is solidly reinforced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No external party experienced at receiving confidential reports (which includes listening to complaints, probing for more information, offering support and advice, and fact-checking) is going to try and use their influence against the reporter. Quite the opposite. And if \u2018clamping down and shutting up\u2019 is the operational style of the company, speaking up &#8211; loud and clear &#8211; is all the more important.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"580\" src=\"https:\/\/reportitnow-global.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/integrity2-1-1024x580.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2879\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reportitnow-global.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/02\/integrity2-1-1024x580.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/reportitnow-global.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/02\/integrity2-1-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/reportitnow-global.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/02\/integrity2-1-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/reportitnow-global.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/02\/integrity2-1.jpg 1237w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keeping with the themes of the Global Integrity Survey, another relevant finding was that only a little over 42% reported regular training about relevant legal, regulatory and professional development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s just for one moment suggest that what they really mean is that the ethics part of conduct risk doesn\u2019t get a look in. And, professional development tends towards the<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018we\u2019re all ethical\u2019, rather than understanding that ethics is as much a discipline as keeping within the speed limit or never falling foul of a parking metre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Workshops on why speaking up is important and how it can be encouraged can\u2019t be underestimated. Without workshops that demonstrate to employees what ethical leadership<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">looks like, and explains a company\u2019s commitment to speaking up, negative experiences will only grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Extroverted, confident and value-conscious employees fare the worst. Put downs and perceptions about their \u2018real motivation\u2019 take hold and genuine consideration of the matters at hand slip away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lets not forget that, in some instances, senior managers either hold or have access to personal information about those who report to them. Such personal insight can quickly become weaponised and targeted. The atmosphere can change rapidly and the slightest hint of an open mind can be lost in battlelines already etched out through previous but unrelated interactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of this is new. But too much is embedded in company cultures resistant to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again the EY report offers substantiation. According to the report about half of the respondents said they would be concerned if information about management decisions were scrutinised. Some would behave unethically in order to protect their careers.<a href=\"https:\/\/mail.google.com\/mail\/u\/1\/#m_-3075371784837950228__ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s just repeat that, with an underline, that some \u2018would behave unethically in order to protect their careers\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those courageous people who have ever or who are currently speaking up, this statement is also the single most powerful insight into why your report, evidence and strength warrants respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s also why serious Boards of Directors, Trustees or alert investors need to reconsider their stance on internal reporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the tsunami hits, it&#8217;s the safety of higher ground.
